Teen Book Club: Catching Fire
6-week novel study for teens (13 and up)
Service Description
This is a teen book club designed for teens who may or may not love reading! In this 6-week course we will complete the second book of the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. This will require students to read or listen to an audiobook version between classes, which averages 20-30 min of reading/listening per day. During class time we will discuss the assigned chapters and accompany our discussion with an interactive project. This makes our classes more lively and fun, and also adds an extra layer of learning literacy and comprehension. Here is a breakdown of our schedule: Week 1 - Discuss Chapters 1-6. Now that you've read The Hunger Games let's keep the momentum going. Please read these chapters ahead of class and be ready to discuss! As an activity we will work on a character web to connect the layers of relationships in the story so far. Week 2: Chapters 7-12. For this week's discussion and activity, students participate in a mock Capitol press conference, and will be assigned one of the following roles: Capitol spokesperson, Hunger Games Reporter, District Citizen, Peacekeeper, previous Victor and Rebel Sympathizer. In order to prepare they are given these roles in advance, so be ready to play in class! Week 3: Chapters 13-18. For our activity, students write a short excerpt entitled, "Peeta's Journal". Since The Hunger Games series is written from the first-person perspective of Katniss, this allows us to imagine what Peeta is feeling/thinking during the Victory Tour and the opening of The Quarter Quell. The writing activity is done independently throughout the week, so please have it completed by our meeting time. Week 4: Chapters 19-24. Create a Commercial or News Broadcast. Students will have prepped a commercial or news broadcast to share in class. Our discussion centers around how the tributes earn sponsors and manipulate the system in order to survive. Get creative and record & edit the video on your own before class, or share it with us live! Week 5: Chapters 25-27. Trivia Review. In class we will discuss the ending of the book as well as play an online quiz game to review Catching Fire. Week 6: Movie watch party!
